UK let-down for Next Gen Broadband

Welcome to the world of yesterday
Friday, 12 September 2008, 12:09

BRITAIN IS NOW expected to fall behind Europe and the rest of the world socially, as well as economically, due to poor broadband connection standards, according to a new study.

The team at the Oxford University which put the report together says that the UK, Spain and Italy are falling behind the rest of the developed world in performance, meaning that some Next Generation Broadband (NGB) web functionality will not be accommodated.

Future services, such as high-definition video streaming, will need high-speed, unwavering broadband connections which, let's face it, we don’t have.

Alastair Nicholson, a member of the research team from the University of Oxford’s Said Business School, explains: "Average download speeds are adequate for web browsing, email and basic video downloading and streaming, but we are seeing more interactive applications, more user-generated content being uploaded and shared, and an increasing amount of high-quality video services becoming available."

The study applauds Sweden and the Netherlands for having the best performance in broadband connections in Europe as they have already upgraded to fibre and cable services.

However, it was Japan which won the prize for being the most currently prepared country for handling and delivering the web applications which need this fast-paced, reliable broadband.

The INQ reported earlier today what problems the UK faces when upgrading to NGB so, until someone decides to cough up the amount needed to re-cable the country, we’re going to lag behind.

The study was put together by Oxford University and the University of Oviedo in Spain and was paid for by networking giant Cisco. µ

Luckly

My connection since Karoo (are *******) upgraded to ADSL2+ my speed has been decent and online gaming is a very nice on my PS3 no lag during WarHawk or anything. I have had a couple of network errors but that was due to the recent released patch. I had to move back thou to my old package where it has 8mbps 30GB monthly download limit £20/mnth. Adverage download was 160kbps but since complaining I now get 360-450kbps sometimes more depending where I am downloading from. There new packages are awful thou mid rnage is £13 1st 3 mnths then £18 there after download limit 10GB/mnth yet there £30 package has a 75GB limit. I had to move back because of this limit when playing online games download content for my PS3 games 10GB just isn't enough. But for the whole of the UK we will never ever be in the top 10 for BB just wont happen when we finally get country wide fibre optic the japanese will have created if not have now a more faster cable to send data across. I also believe we get conned on packages by all ISP's just a cash in scam really.

I'm wired next week

I'm starting with a modest 100 Mb/s next week. I can always upgrade later. I even live in the country side in Denmark. While the brits are wearing diaper, we go for fiber. Don't be sad now. You did invent the telephone :D Bye bye - I am off to the future :D

I am maxed out at 1Mbps

I live 4 miles out of the centre of a large town in the UK. I have the maximum speed available on copper at that distance, a massive 1Mbps. How do I get a work permit for Denmark?

Denmark Eh

You may have 100mb/s but being from Denmark doesnt leave you a lot to do with it..we did invent the telephone, we also invented most of the worlds pleasure activities, so maybe we just dont need 100 mb/s just yet, we can still find other things to do, like eating danish bacon on our bread.....

We're scottish not british

Can I just say that it was a scot that invented the phone, not a brit, thanks.

Can I just say that it was a Italian (Antonio Meucci) that invented the phone, not a scot, thanks.

oh well

a good bit of the uk can now get BE broadband(which i switched to after the can of worms that was virgin media).they use adsl 2,so no bullshxt with bt phone line congestion etc, unlimited bandwidth and i constantly get at least 20 mbps for a measly 18 squids a month.quite frankly, unless you develop another pair of eyes in order to watch 2 hd streams at once,i think this will do most people nicely.

Duh...

British means England Wales and Scotland, therefore you are both Scottish AND British. "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" includes England, Ireland and Wales in Great Britain, along with Northern Ireland...but then as such a strong patriot - YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT! :-) The internet connection here is complete and utter crap - 20mbps Cable here. I hope SOMEONE brings 1gbps FTTH soon cos I hate having to wait hours to download large files! :-(

Ugly

Woot, so things are that horrible up there? Here in Brazil we're beggining to see some high quality internet conections, with 8mpbs links going for ~U$ 100 with 60 gb cap... on cable and for about the same price in ADSL 2+. My provider even offers a 20mbps ADSL 2+ speeds, but at a premium (~280 month).. Still, I've signed for a 5mbps link myself, my provider gave me a megabit and a half more out of sheer kindness and I get 700-800kb/s download speeds depending where I'm downloading from. The only problem with fast links is exactly that... Most of the internet is slow as hell, some times I ask myself why am I paying for a highspeed link if none of the existing streaming sites send videos faster than 50-150k/s ? I have to use a bloody donwload accelerator to fully use my conection... Even in bittorrent I rarely get above 450kb/s.... the thruth is: the whole internet needs to be upgraded..

LET'S ALL MOVE TO DENMARK

Okay, so a Brit invented the telephone... yet you seem to forget who also invented your fiber connection and the web at the end of it. Denmark invented bacon, pastry, and, er, peeing fountains. Or is that in Holland? No, wait, Belgium?? Hell, who cares!

Lovely thick porridge

Claiming that Scotland isn't in Britain when any map will tell you otherwise just makes you look foolish. Scots who also cling to the invention of the telephone as a lifeline to significance - despite the fact that Bell invented the device in North America and later chose to become an American - should really modernise their tune. These days we all make more calls over GSM anyway.

Bodge Job BT are short sighted...

The BT 21CN project (21st Century Network) that they are rolling out is pathetic. Why go to all the trouble and expense of replacing bits of copper and aluminium cable with.... copper cable... Well obviously to save some cash. Unfortunately in the long run it’s just a waste of money, we need fibre not more copper. I'm beginning to be embarrassed at living in a country that is so short sighted.
