The incurable itch for scribbling affects many - Juvenal
MOZILLA LARGE FROMAGE John Lilly has had a pop at Apple's sneaky back-door shenanigans.
He said on his bog that " What Apple is doing now with their Apple Software Update on Windows is wrong. It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, and that’s bad — not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole Web."
He was referring to Apple's decision to bundle Apple Software Update with the latest free download of Itunes. The thing that really seems to have got everybody's panties in a bunch is that the updater also offers to install the latest version of Safari... even if you've never had it installed. Hardly an 'update' in our book.
And the real kicker is that the box is pre-ticked meaning that you have to go through all the time and effort of unticking a box to stop the evil Apple empire from installing some free software on your machine.
Comments on Lilly's blog posting are pretty evenly split between those foaming at the mouth about the injustice of it all and those saying 'Everyone does it... get over it. Just untick the box!' or words to that effect.
Lilly has been accused in some quarters of complaining to protect his own interests (a large chunk of Mozilla's income comes straight from the coffers of the mighty Google). But he strongly denied this in a follow-up post: "It isn’t about competition. As a consumer, I want more competition. Firefox is better because there’s competition from Safari and others — that’s great, because it means that normal people can find the software that works best for them and make their own choices. Competition — and choice — is central to everything we do; without it, we’re nowhere. µ
I really don't see why this is a problem for anyone who isnt a retard. It's not like someone with half a brain would install that bloatware iTunes on their PC anyway.
It's not that they did this that bothers me, it is the blatant lie in the description "it displays pages faster than any other browser" BS
Why is this news? Apple has been at it for quite some time. I personally dont want Itunes on My system, but I do want quicktime. Although want is overstating the truth. I get sick ans tired of apple wanting to "update" the quicktime install with Itunes. It pops up regularry, allready pre ticked. And at those times there is no newer version of quicktime available. How many users have fallen for that trap? Never read about that anywhere, but now apple does the same with safari and finally the world notices. I took apple's software update of the autostart list, never to return. It's a nasty piece of software, at least it's used in a nasty way.
While offering one (1) piece of information in the whole article, the article itself is very poorly written, and obviously biased. Did you purposely misspell Blog? Or is bog your own made up word? If humor was the main objective of your article, you sorely missed your spot.
1. Remove Apple software from PC. 2. Destroy iPod. 3. Get on with life.
Getting the WGA "update" is also OK cause you can always untick the checkbox, is that what you are saying?
Where was the outcry when Adobe also started pushing the Yahoo toolbar to anyone downloading Adobe reader?
Can i just say... there is a tick box! Anyone who doesnt look at what they are installing before they click 'OK' are asking for trouble. There is nothing wrong with Apple offering other software to a user which they think they may also want to use. if the option is there to not install it then there is no issue. (then again the google toolbar is completely different.. that installation option is everywhere and very annoying!)
my wife installed itunes AND the "update" for safari... ill never let her use my pc again...
This may happen a lot, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't bring it up. Let's have twice as many articles on it. If we can shame companies into not pulling crap like this I'm all for it
its faster then firefox and much prettier!!
Tickboxes are great, when it's for opt-in. Opt-out tends to imply it's some sort of "needed" option. This is much the same as those "tick to be added to our PR mailing list". Safari certainly isn't an "update", many lay users will probably think it's an update to IE (since they don't know that there're alternate browsers). Same as iTunes isn't an update to Quicktime. Google's Toolbar being offered everywhere is just as annoying, but that doesn't justify this any more.
Apple is leveraging their mp3 player monopoly to break into the windows browser market. How is that substantially different from Microsoft leveraging their OS monopoly to break into the browser market, for which they have been fined billions?
I love to read bogs and drink boggs.
gray, inq has used "bog" instead of "blog" for as long as i've known them; apple software update is a piece of crap software, together with itunes and quicktime player; if you want to play .mov on your computer, install quicktime alternative and get rid of all the schitty apple software
oh, and btw, what's wrong with the post dates? 25 mar 2008 i get, but 26 dec 2007???!
>> its faster then firefox and much prettier!! Prettier than what? A badger's ****hole perhaps ??
Who cares? If people all of a sudden start using Safari as their primary browser because of some iTunes update check-box, there was obviously no compelling reason for the user to prefer Firefox or IE over it. In the end, John Lilly has forgotten the fact that Firefox just doesn't offer anything special that compels users to switch to it. If it did, people would flock to it from IE, and not be suckered into using Safari.
iTunes is the best music player, Safari is the best browser, but if you really don't want them, uncheck the checkbox and don't install them! It's not rocket science.
If safari's faster, Include a benchmark link to prove it. I prefer Opera 9.50B2 myself, but hey people are entitled to their own opinion right. Prettier is a opinion as well. I personally think anyone caught using safari's skin as a fashion statement ought to be Tarred, Feathered, Shot with slow speed bird shot multiple time's, Stretched, Lynched and quartered. But hey just 'about' any opinion is right in its beholder's mind right? Kudo's to apples Badger FCKHOLE. You've pissed a few pissable people off apple and don't try to spoon feed my either It's not like I'm two.
This is nothing compared to what Yahoo is doing with it's messenger. I don't want my preferences changed for me thank you. Installing an extra program isn't a big deal. Setting it as a default replacing my preferences is. The exact same reason why I use linux, you get only what is necessary, nothing more unless you specifically ask for it.
Its TWENTY THREE MB!
