Four-core Opteron sparkles with VMware
CHIPPER AMD claims a four-socket server built by Dell using its Quad-Core AMD Opteron SE processors has chalked up the top score for virtualisation performance based on the VMmark benchmark from VMware.
The Dell PowerEdge R905 with Quad-Core AMD Opteron SE processors scored 14.17 and achieved a score of 10 tiles or 60 virtual machines, whatevetr that means.
SpokesAMD, Patrick Patla, reckons the score solidifies "AMD’s position as the industry leader in performance and performance-per-watt for multi-processor servers.”
You can imagine how cool this would have been if the firm could've delivered the chip on time.
AMD boasts its own virtualisation technology with Rapid Virtualization Indexing which, apparently, helps customers running Barcelona-flavoured Opteron processors to improve their performance due to the system’s ability to more easily manage memory and decrease the time “switching” between virtual machines.
Dell Girl, Sally Stevens, said the VMmark result "is another testament to Dell and AMD’s ongoing collaboration in providing virtualisation optimised solutions that help customers meet today’s increasing data centre computing demands.”

intel's onslaught...
AMD is indeed the industry leader in performance and performance-per-watt for multi-processor servers, I just hoped that they have delivered this product earlier. Intel's donnington may truly hurt AMD's next generation server cpu's.
