FRANCE'S PRESIDENTIAL CABINET has recently passed a law which will see internet users excommunicated from their ISPs for repeated transgressions of a piratey nature.
From next January, anyone caught downloading pirated material will get an email telling them to stop. Second time offenders will get a registered letter telling them to... stop... no really this time.
Third time losers will be booted off of their internet connection for a year in a 'three strikes and you're out' deal.
Which is a bit of a bind because there is only one Internet provider in France. Hang on... no there isn't. There are hundreds. And one of them will be more than happy to take your €uros no matter how many times you download Debbie Does Dallas or the latest Lilly Alan CD.
So how the new watchdog, HADPOI (roughly translated, High Authority for Copyright Protection and Dissemination of Works on the Internet) will police the new law remains to be seen.
The biggest problem seems to be that, if little Xavier decides to nick a few MP3s off of the Interwibble, and he does it three times, then the rest of his family will be cut off from the rest of the world.
We fully expect to see effigies of France's Culture Minister, Christine Albanel (who described banning people from the Internet as a "preventative and educational approach") swinging from the lamp posts of Paris suburbs in the new year. µ
Is a private Internet connection the only option to be connected to the network? What about wireless internet?
Viva La France selling out to the RIAA and the MPAA. Why is Europea doing everything the same Americanos are doing? Who is running the EU? Maybe the US Congress. The fact is, no matter how many people disagree, Money can really buy LOVE!
French people have a Tax on CD and DVD blank media, this tax was justify to pay for the cost of priracy, it is given to the autors. Now that Sarko make it illegale, he got to drop this tax ... He is insuring that he will not be re-elected, I guess he wants more time with his wife ;-)
About the 'selling out' bit, I think french people listen a lot to french music released on french labels and they have their own 'RIAF' or whatever it's called. Of course I'm not sure who owns those french labels in the end, companies own companies own companies, so it MIGHT be sony after all.
So, just because the French do it, it means to you the whole Europe? Brush up on your geography...
Yes, I know where Europa is. I don't think that it has to do with geography at all. Nowadays, every country in Europa wants to be a member of the EU. Maybe it is not only the RIAA, MPAA, and the US Congress who is running the EU but also Micro$oft. Just look what happens with OOXML and ISO...... Want more proof than that???????
Cutting off the internet on 3 offense compared to the measures other countries in EU are trying to take such as huge fines or incarceration, i think i choose cutting off the internet, and still is on the 3rd strike, so well, it could be way worse. I mean, in the US it can be quite bananas, so currently living in France, I think it can be still half ok, and I'm guessing that downloading all the junk that is not French or available in France quite likel won´t be taken into account.
