Intel scraps Technology Journal

AFTER A GOOD 12-year run, the Intel Technology Journal (ITJ) is being put down by Chipzilla, in what is indeed a great loss to tech-philes everywhere.

Making its online debut in 1997, having started out 18 years previously as hard copy, the ITJ, in stark contrast to Intel’s usual territorial possessiveness over its technology secrets, was a veritable goldmine of company white papers and articles outlining the finer points of the firm’s most cutting edge technologies.

It sadly now seems the quality publication will be sucked head-first into the spin machine that is Intel Press Publications, which means more marticles (marketing articles), and less useful information.

ITJ seems to have resigned itself to its fate, complete with a disastrous last podcast, ironically giving us all a taste of what we can look forward to in the future.

The podcast in question is supposedly a cosy little chit-chat between interviewer, publisher-editor Lin Chao and VP of Intel’s technology and manufacturing group and a leaders of the firm’s 45-nm programme, Kaizad Mistry. What it actually sounds like is a conversation between two PR vulcans, one, Mistry, even going a step further to enhance the listening experience by talking through a walky-talky. To say “scripted” would be wildly understating matters.

Also, perhaps in case a listener understandably nodded off during the first five minutes of monotone, Mistry feels the need to answer his last question twice. Yep, he answers it, and then says exactly the same thing again. Word for word. Sounds like he’s being a good boy and toeing the company line, giving us a rather insightful, if depressing, glimpse into ITJ’s future at the same time. µ

The monotonous podcast
